I, the Prodigal

Luke 15:11-32 English Standard Version

I first heard the Prodigal Son parable in Sunday School many years ago. The message I heard was. He had a real nice dad and a cranky older brother.

Later I revisited the story. I came to see how I took on all the roles. I played the role of the foolish prodigal, the older self-righteous son and the father. This gave me some understanding of my part in these relationships at various times and places.

Having squandered his inheritance, the young man decided to return home. His only hope was to work as a servant for his father.

When his father saw him approaching. The father immediately hurried out to greet his son with love and gratitude (the son I had lost has returned). He placed a ring on his finger and made arrangements for a celebration.

What I often miss is that the father greeted his son immediately without condition.

When I change direction and return to the source of my life, God rushes to greet and bless me.

What I know now is that no one is a throwaway, no one will be rejected and condemned by God.
